Advanced training course for managers and supervisors

Purpose: This course is designed to assist you in developing and implementing health and hygiene management plans in accordance with the European standards and will provide examples of up-to-date, good practices.

Who should attend?
  • Medical staff, public health officers, other ship officers and crew members with duties related to medical and public health operations on board passenger ships, as well as managers and supervisors
  • In-house or contracted trainers responsible to deliver health and hygiene training to crew members
Course content & objectives: This comprehensive training course will delve into key concepts in public health operations, integrating critical lessons learned from the COVID-19 pandemic. Participants will gain insights into auditing medical facility operations and developing effective plans for infectious disease prevention, mitigation, and management. The course will provide an in-depth overview of prevention and control measures for gastroenteritis, Legionnaires’ disease, vaccine-preventable diseases, and influenza on board ships. Attendees will learn to identify common illnesses on passenger ships, recognize when case reports exceed expected thresholds, and implement rapid response strategies to manage and control outbreaks effectively. Additionally, the course will offer guidance on accessing reliable resources and alerts related to food safety and infectious diseases in Europe and globally. By the end of the training, participants will be equipped with practical tools and knowledge to strengthen public health operations in maritime environments.

Learning objectives

  • Apply the requirements from the European Manual in evaluating medical facilities areas for compliance with infection control processes. Click here to download the 2nd Edition of the European Manual.
  • Describe transmission routes for gastroenteritis, Legionnaires’ disease, vaccine preventable diseases and influenza.
  • Demonstrate knowledge on surveillance demands and pre-boarding passenger and crew screening principles.
  • Use of the Outbreak Management Plan tool to organise both routine and elevated levels of illness when triggers are reached.
  • Evaluate the pro-active role of supervisors in implementing the response actions and observation of activities to ensure guidance is followed strictly.
  • Apply control measures which match the illness and response phase established.
  • Assess the methods followed in housekeeping closely to prevent illness spread and repeat cabin occurrence.
  • Implement the International Health Regulations requirements for ship operators.
Course methodology: This course will combine self-paced online learning (asynchronous) and online live streaming (synchronous) methods. The training approach of the course consists of:
  • Lectures – instruction and theory on the subject matter
  • Online self-paced exercises – adapting theory
  • Case studies – use of scenarios to exercise problem solving
  • Questions and answers – updating skills and knowledge
  • Resources in the form of support documentation in an electronic format
Assessment: At the beginning and at the end of the training course, there will be an assessment. It will include multiple choice and short answer questions covering the topics discussed in the course.

Aim of the assessment: It is a tool to give a better idea of the trainees’ learning progress.

Administrative Information: Training fees

The cost for attendance for this course is 500 euros per participant.

 

 Cancellations and penalties policy:

If you proceed to any cancellation 2 days before the start of the course (Sunday 1 June 2025) the fees will be returned but you will be charged with any bank transfer costs that may be incurred by the transaction.

If you cancel after Sunday 1 June 2025, the penalty will be €100 plus any bank transfer costs that may be incurred by the transaction.

We reserve the right to cancel the training event if minimum enrollments are not met. In which case, all course fees will be fully refunded.

Certification: A certificate of successful completion will be issued to participants who successfully pass (>=70%) the final assessment. You must attend all days and complete all modules and mandatory sessions in order to receive your certificate.
Materials required: This training course will require access to the internet to connect to the asynchronous E-learning platform and also to the live broadcasting sessions (broadcasting platform to be used: ZOOM).

  • PC, laptop, Mac, iPad or tablet
  • Web browser
  • Access permission to Vimeo service (https://vimeo.com/)  for video viewing
